The government has warmly welcomed the successful conclusion of the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, marking the start of South Africa’s seventh democratic administration. Celebrating 30 years of freedom and democracy, this election reaffirms the nation’s commitment to a vibrant constitutional democracy.
2024 Elections Testament to Democracy
“These elections showcase our dynamic democratic processes,” stated the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS). The government thanked the 16,248,027 citizens who exercised their constitutional right with patience, tolerance, and enthusiasm. The voter turnout, as reported by the Electoral Commission (IEC), was 58.58%.
Inclusive Democratic Milestone
“This election marks a significant step in our inclusive democracy, as outlined by the Electoral Amendment Act 1 of 2023. The comprehensive electoral process, from voter registration to vote counting and announcement of results by the IEC, has concluded successfully,” GCIS added.
Election Day Highlights
The elections saw an unprecedented turnout, reminiscent of the nation’s first democratic elections. Despite a 15-minute delay due to large crowds, the election proceeded smoothly, starting at 3:15 PM. This was the second cup final between the two teams this season, with Pirates previously defeating Sundowns in the MTN8 final through penalties.
Praise for the IEC
The government commended the IEC for ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair election, maintaining transparency throughout the process. With 70 political parties, 11 independent candidates, and 52 national contestants, the elections were highly competitive. Over 14,903 candidates vied for 887 seats in the National and Provincial Legislatures.
2024 Elections Observations and Future Prospects
Both domestic and international observers declared the 2024 elections free and fair, reinforcing confidence in the electoral process. The government congratulated all political parties and thanked citizens, community leaders, election officials, volunteers, and law enforcement agencies for their contributions.
Commitment to Democracy and Stability
The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and respecting the authority of the IEC. Any attempt to undermine the state’s constitutional order will be addressed. GCIS Acting Director-General Nomonde Mnukwa highlighted the elections as a milestone in South Africa’s 30-year journey of freedom and democracy.
The public is urged to avoid spreading misinformation or inciting violence. Law enforcement remains vigilant to ensure post-election peace and safety.
Parliamentary Transition
The Chief Justice has gazetted the rules for the first sitting of the National Assembly, the National Council of Provinces, and Provincial Legislatures, which must occur within 14 days after the election results declaration. During this sitting, the Chief Justice will oversee the election of parliamentary office bearers, including the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces.
The government remains dedicated to serving its citizens and ensuring a smooth parliamentary transition. This election has underscored South Africa’s enduring commitment to democratic principles and processes, setting a precedent for the future.
