Mamelodi Sundowns continued their relentless pursuit of a historic seventh consecutive Premier Soccer League (PSL) title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United at Loftus on Tuesday night. This win not only brought them closer to the title but also marked a new PSL record, with the Brazilians going unbeaten in 22 matches since the start of the season.
With this victory, Sundowns now require just six more points from their remaining games to secure an unassailable lead at the top of the table, currently sitting at 62 points. On the flip side, Sekhukhune United’s hopes for a top-two finish took a hit, leaving them fourth on the log.
Coach Rulani Mokwena opted for wholesale changes, resting all 11 players who started in the recent 1-0 loss to Esperance in the first leg of the Champions League. The likes of Ronwen Williams, Divine Lunga, and Themba Zwane were given a break to prepare for the crucial second leg against Esperance.
Despite fielding a significantly altered lineup, Mokwena assembled a strong team with experienced campaigners like Denis Onyango, Lebo Maboe, and Mosa Lebusa. This move showcased the depth and quality of Sundowns’ squad.
In contrast, Sekhukhune United came with their strongest possible lineup, including key players like Badra Sangare and Daniel Cardoso. However, they found themselves trailing early in the game as Tashreeq Matthews capitalized on a defensive error to put Sundowns ahead within two minutes.
Sundowns quickly doubled their lead, with Matthews turning provider for Thapelo Morena. Despite United pulling one back from the penalty spot through Chibuike Ohizu, Sundowns held on for the win.
The match wasn’t without its setbacks for Sundowns, as veteran goalkeeper Onyango was forced off the field due to injury in the first half. However, his replacement, Jody February, stepped in admirably for his debut.
Looking ahead, Sundowns face a crucial second leg against Esperance, where they aim to overturn a 1-0 deficit and secure a spot in the Champions League final. With their sights set on both domestic and continental glory, the Brazilians are proving to be an unstoppable force in South African football.
