MTN8 Quarterfinals Results And Semi-Finals Draw

This weekend saw the MTN8 quarterfinals being contested by the 8 teams that finished in the top 8 of the previous premiership.

SuperSport United was the first team through to the semi-finals after securing a 3-2 victory over new-comers, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

Thereafter, Orlando Pirates secured their spot in the next round of the competition, when they knocked Cape Town City out with a 1-0 victory at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

Gavin Hunt secured his first victory at the helm of Kaizer Chiefs as Amakhosi progressed through to the next round with a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United, compliments of a Yagan Sasman brace.

Finally, Mamelodi Sundowns’ suffered a 1-0 defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic, their first game and loss with Manqoba Mngqithi, Rulani Mokwena and senior coach, Steve Komphela at the helm.

Who Plays In The MTN8 Competition?

The MTN 8 is a South African football (soccer) cup competition, featuring the top 8 clubs at the close of the previous Premiership season. This competition is one of the longest-standing knockout cup competitions in South Africa, first being contested in 1972.

Cellular giants MTN have sponsored the event since 2008. Before then it was known as BP Top 8 (sponsored by BP) and SAA Supa 8 (sponsored by South African Airways).

The first round is structured such that the team at the top of the previous season’s table plays the team that finished eighth; second place plays seventh; third plays sixth and fourth plays fifth.

The semifinals are played over two legs.

In the mean-time the PSL has confirmed the draw for the semi-finals. Below are the confirmed two-legged fixtures which will take place on the final weekend of October and then on the first weekend of November 2020:

The winner receives R8 million.
