Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for coronavirus and will miss Portugal’s Nations League game against Sweden on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old is currently asymptomatic and has been released from the national team squad in order to self-isolate.
The Portuguese Football Federation(PFF) confirmed in a statement: “Following the positive case, the remaining players underwent new tests this Tuesday morning, all with a negative result, and are available to Fernando Santos for training this afternoon, in Cidade do Futebol.”
Cristiano Ronaldo played in the 0-0 draw at France in the Nations League on Sunday, and also in the 0-0 draw against Spain in a friendly last week.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward started against Spain in Lisbon, coming off late on during the second half of the goalless draw.He then played all of the Nations League A3 fixture against France in Saint-Denis on Sunday.
The stalemate in Paris means Portugal and France are level on seven points, with Ronaldo’s side topping the group on goal difference.
Wednesday’s opponents Sweden are bottom of the group, having failed to pick up a single point from their first three matches.
In the reverse fixture in September, Ronaldo became the first European player to reach 100 international goals after scoring twice in Portugal’s 2-0 win.
He had scored in each of his Serie A appearances this season, including two goals in the 2-2 draw against Roma on 27 September.
The test result also means Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt for Juventus’ Champions League group match with Barcelona on 28 October, which was set to pit Ronaldo against his old rival Lionel Messi.
Brazil forward Neymar, his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappe and AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic have also tested positive for the virus in recent weeks. Premier Leaguechampions Liverpool placed Senegalese forward Sadio Mane and Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara in isolation after they tested positive last week.
