Mahindra South Africa unveiled its Global Pik Up bakkie concept at its signature Futurescape event in Cape Town on 15 August. Interestingly, this event also coincided with India’s 77th Independence Day. It was a special occasion where motoring media from around the world got a first glimpse of the bakkie
While the Haval P Series and Mahindra Pik Up S11 have served as a semi-comforting alternative to those who couldn’t make those hefty payments on glamorous lifestyle bakkies such as the Ranger, Hilux, D-Max, Amarok, Triton and Navara, Mahindra has been very busy developing a new double-cab, codenamed Z121, that is sure to ruffle some feathers in the segment.
In the ever-evolving landscape of the South African automotive market, the Mahindra Global Pik Up stands out as a compelling option for consumers seeking a versatile and capable vehicle.
Overview of Mahindra Global Pik Up
Mahindra: A Trusted Name in the South African Market. Mahindra started selling vehicles in South Africa in October 2004.
With a strong presence in the South African automotive scene, Mahindra has carved a niche for itself as a reliable and innovative brand. The Mahindra Global Pik Up is a testament to the brand’s commitment to providing vehicles that cater to diverse consumer needs.
Veejay Nakra, president of Automotive Sector for Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said at the event: “The new Global Pik Up marks a significant step in Mahindra’s Go-Global Strategy. This robust and tough vehicle, engineered with cutting-edge technology, is versatile and capable and meets high safety standards.”
Exterior Design and Features
Bold Design, Rugged Appeal. The Mahindra Global Pik Up boasts a rugged and robust exterior design that resonates with South African consumers.
Sections like the bonnet, fenders and rear bumper have been beefed up to bring across the imposing stance, along with the five-spoke alloy wheels. The tailgate is embossed with the Mahindra name so that people know what’s driving in front of them.
While no details relating to dimensions were revealed, the Global Pik Up sported chunky all-terrain tyres, illuminated treadplates integrated into the side-steps, a snorkel, a steel roof carrier and winch, with dual tow hooks nestled into the central section of the front bumper.
Interior Comfort and Features
Nothing could be deduced from the interior as a result of Mahindra having completely covered the cabin as a means of either hiding the final look, or to disguise the bare shell due to the Pik Up still being a concept.
Five-star safety. The Global Pik Up aims to meet the highest global standards, including a 5-Star safety rating. It will include safety specs such as semi-autonomous driving features (Level 2 ADAS), trailer sway mitigation, and drowsy driver detection, to name a few.
When will the Global Pik Up arrive in South Africa?
The Global Pik-Up will be heading our way somewhere between 2024 and 2025 and it may also receive a more interesting name – Mahindra says any suggestions are welcome.
